The hook

Crystal Lake premiered on Peacock on October 15, with all eight episodes released that day, and generated 1.3 billion minutes watched in its first 11 days, according to Nielsen data. [1]

What happened

Peacock’s Crystal Lake takes the story of the Voorhees family back to the beginning, revisiting Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, who is the catalyst for the murder and mayhem in 1980’s Friday the 13th. [2]

The details

The series is created by Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as showrunner, and its premise centers on Pam Voorhees, grieving her son Jason, who drowned in the town lake, as two strangers dig into her past. [3]

How we got here

By 2001 the Friday the 13th franchise had hit a snag, as audiences had already seen Jason Voorhees go to Crystal Lake, Manhattan, and Hell. [2] The screenwriter Todd Farmer proposed sending the franchise’s killer into space as the next direction. [2] In Jason X, Jason Voorhees, played by Kane Hodder, cannot die, and is held at the Crystal Lake Research Facility in 2010. [2] Rowan LaFontaine, head of the facility, wants to put Jason in a cryogenic chamber, but the government has other plans for him. [2] Rowan lures Jason into a cryogenic chamber after he stabs her, leaving both of them frozen in time. [2] In 2455, a group of space explorers led by Professor Brandon Lowe discovers the research facility and the frozen bodies, bringing Rowan and Jason aboard their ship, the Grendel, and reviving Rowan with nanotechnology while believing Jason to be dead. [2] Jason rises from his slumber and begins a killing spree on the spaceship. [2] In the third act, the android KM‑14 becomes an action hero and annihilates Jason near the medical station where the nanites reside. [2] KM‑14 obliterates Jason, who is rebuilt bigger and stronger as a cyborg with a brand‑new metal mask and armor, pushing Condor into a giant drill during their fight and freezing Adrienne’s head in liquid nitrogen, shattering it against the counter.
