Where Chapter 1196 left Sanji

In Chapter 1196, Sanji tried to kill Saint Killingham with his kicks ^[1]. Killingham then fused with Ivankov, and the resulting being has Ivankov's head and Kirin's body ^[1].

A flashback in that chapter has Ivankov telling Sanji that he lacked self-love ^[1]. That matters because Sanji's biggest weakness is that he does not love himself ^[1]. Sanji realizes that being a Straw Hat helps him overcome that weakness ^[1].

The chapter ends with Sanji lighting his cigarette as he prepares to fight Killingham again ^[1].

What happens in Chapter 1197

Chapter 1197 is titled Love Is Defense and focuses only on Sanji and his fight against Killingham ^[2]. Sanji has not wanted the genetically modified bodies his siblings chose, and he believes that becoming like them would be a fate worse than death ^[2].

He also realizes that Armament Haki is not enough to overcome Killingham ^[2]. So Sanji transforms into a hybrid form and coats himself in armor that can only be destroyed by someone who can use Conqueror's Haki ^[2].

Then he launches a kick infused with his flames and Haki, with black lightning appearing in the scene ^[2]. The kick appears to strike Killingham's face and shatter his helmet ^[2].
